One of the most reclusive designers of India, he prefers his clothes to do the talking and is seldom seen at parties and social events. He is also one designer who doesn’t like walking out to bow after his shows get over. Nevertheless, all his characteristics were put aside when we spotted Rajesh Pratap Singh at the launch of ‘The Collective’ store, recently in Delhi. The show was directed and styled by Manish Malhotra and Karan Johar together. While K Jo and MM made a hasty exit, seen in a candid mood was Pratap. Wasting no time, we caught up with the designer, who spoke exclusively to stylekandy.com
SK: - There has been a fast increase in the number of retail stores catering to different brands and designers, under one roof. How is The Collective different?
RPS: - There is a vast difference between what other stock stores offer and what is being offered at The Collective. You wouldn’t find so many designer brands gelling together to promote fashion in the market. It is about keeping it chic yet approachable by consumers.
SK: - Would your clothes be available at this store. What is your association with this venture?
RPS: - Absolutely!! They approached us with this unique idea and we felt that we should be a part of something which stands out when offering fashion consumers something, which we can be termed as one stop station for all glam-need
SK: - What is Rajesh’s style statement?
RPS: - I don’t have a style. I am naïve at it (would we believe that?)
SK: - Who are the designers that you adore and you would like to wear your label?
RPS: - Indian is fast enriching itself with fashion and all the designers are going great guns with their creative best out in display for fashion lovers. However, I can’t afford to buy a designer wear and dress myself …got no money you see!!
SK: - Do you check the labels (brands) before buying clothes for yourself?
RPS: - With a grin … I don’t even know most of the names for brands.
SK: - What projects are keeping you busy these days?
RPS: - A lot of designing work for uniforms is going in. Big projects, with nice sense of glamour to add to it.
SK:-But does uniforms allow you to be creative as it is a somewhat rigid concept?
RPS: - It is a very wrong notion that much cannot be done with uniforms. There is a lot to offer in terms of textures and looks when it comes to designing a uniform. You would see that once we bring it out for all to see.
