 SEE ME NOT!

Shweta Ganesh| 03-July-2013

Mirror Mirror, on the wall who’s the prettiest of us all? Secretly each of have a talking mirror which compels us to define our jaws, tone those arms and work on those acne spots. A survey conducted in Britain says that, on an average a woman sees herself about thirty-eight times a day! That includes all reflective surfaces including your phone, laptop, Ipad, glass table and the regular mirrors of course. Autumn Madrano, a freelance journalist based in New York sparked a rage when she took up the Mirror-Fasting test when she abstained from looking at the mirror for a week which turned into a month and finally a year. She would constantly update her blog and tell her readers how she’s coping with the challenge. It wasn’t long before this test reached India and secretly people took it up. The fashion industry thrives on good looks and looking at the mirror is as important as having a smartphone! We ask people from the modelling and glamour world as to how they would survive without looking at the mirror for a week, of course when they aren’t working. Here’s the verdict...

Gauahar Khan :
I’m addicted to myself and love looking at myself! (Laughs) It’s more of a habit and an everyday thing. I have been dancing since I was young and I always rehearse in front of the mirror where I perfect my expressions, steps etc. Moreover, it’s a positive thing and only good has come of it. In fact, in Islam we have a prayer that we say when we look into the mirror. We are supposed to thank Allah for our good looks and ask Him to give us a good heart as well. I always do that and motivate myself to be a better person. So the question of a diminishing self-image doesn’t exist then!

Diva Dhavan :
When I’m not working I barely look at the mirror except for the basics like brushing my teeth and washing my face. In fact, looking at my reflection is never the first thing on my mind and I’m more concerned about washing my hands. Cleaning my hands under the running tap doesn’t require a mirror anyway! So, I could go on without the mirror for a week.

Shivalika Sharma :
This is impossible for me! My house is filled with mirrors at every nook and corner because I love looking at myself every now and then. I believe that a mirror shows off your true reflection and it’s a reassurance which makes me happy. My reflection helps me relieve stress because I go beyond what the mirror shows me. So, I encourage people to look beyond the obvious and give love to the body. This boosts self-esteem and one’s image.

Sophie Chaudhry :

Whenever I travel to beaches and islands most hotels don’t even have a full-length mirror. I find bi only use the mirror in the morning and at night for a few minutes. Going without a mirror completely might be a challenge for me! Even though it’s not about looking presentable 24*7, I like to look my presentable best every time that I step out. Nonetheless, I also thrive on challenges. So you never know I might just take this up for the thrill of it!

So, ladies you don’t have to necessarily look at the reflective surface as a son of Satan’s! Don’t let it determine your self-worth and don’t be so overtly critical about what the mirror shows you. Look at yourself and smile because you’re beautiful. Once you’ve realized that make sure to pass on that compliment to the one standing next to you!
