Love for fashion
Now this is a no-brainer. If you are looking for a job within the fashion industry you need to possess a keen sense of fashion, form and colours. This quality is inherent and cannot generally be acquired. You cannot stand a chance in the industry if you are not passionate about what you do.
Ear for Music
Most times it is the choreographers who select the music for the shows. The music is a very important aspect of the entire show flow as it not only ensures that the show is entertaining but also memorable. You need to have an ear for music that may be ethnic, western, psychedelic and even Arabic or Latin.
‘Patience’ is key in the job of a fashion choreographer. You are the captain of the ship and it is your neck on the line if something goes wrong. In this situation it is imperative to be focussed on the job at hand and be alert through the entire show but at the same time be sensitive to the models, receptive to the designers and articulate with the technicians. You have to constantly maintain your cool and be on call at all times.
When choreographing a show you have to be coordinating with a lot of technicians, be it the sound engineers, the light guys, the stage theatrics team etc. Therefore, certain know-how of the science behind everything that goes into putting together a show always helps.
As a choreographer you need to be sure of what you are doing as your instructions to the rest of the team would determine how the show is put together. Steering everyone in the same direction can be bit of a challenge when working with such a huge team making team work an essential attribute towards achieving co-ordination and harmony.
