MAPPING INDIAN FASHION

Shweta Ganesh| Posted On: 20-June-2013

From Cannes to the global catwalk, India is finally making a mark internationally. Dissecting the international map of fashion to observe the fashion capitals of the world, India is rapidly growing to be a newly scouted destination for everything that spells fashion and luxe. Apart from the ‘usual’ fashion capitals of the world – Paris, London, New York and Milan, India is rapidly growing up to be a rich source of high fashion. What trend started off last year with Jason Wu and Lagerfeld- this year Marchesa, Vera Wang, Calvin Klein and Rachel Roy have blown us away with their India-inspired collections!  For us, this is a clear indicator that the romance between India and the West is going strong. Sk brings you five such Indian designers who are creating a creating a furore abroad.

3. Falguni & Shane Peacock
In 2010, when Fergie decided to opt for an electric blue and black short number by designer duo Shane and Falguni Peacock, it took the world by storm. The design was futuristic, edgy and sexy just like the designers themselves who are known for their eclectic creations. She picked this outfit randomly from a store and chose to wear it for the AMA’s. Since then, the designer duo has been associated with many celebrities from Madonna to Katy Perry designing various outfits for them. This year too, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez and Demi Lovato dazzled in creations by this designer duo.

4. Ritu Kumar
The Empress of Indian couture, Ritu Kumar has taken Indian wear to another level so it was no surprise that she finally received her Padma Shri for her contribution to the industry. Her work which involves rich fabrics and heavy embroidery and detailing has been noticed world over. This might explain why Mischa Barton chose to wear an ensemble created by the designer. The actress wore an ankle length flared dress with dorri work from her prêt line Label. Even former Spice Girl ‘Mel B’ was spotted picking an outfit designed by Ritu. The designer also unveiled her latest collection in Thimpu, Bhutan at the ‘Textile Academy’ which was very well received.

5. Naeem Khan
Mumbai based designer has taken the world by storm overnight when America’s First lady Michelle Obama wore a gown designed by Naeem on one of the occasions. His debut on the Indian ramp at LFW left him with everyone talking about his talent, unique designs and simplicity. He combines classic glamour with rich and modern embellishments. Having created his trademark style of using the ‘flourishes’, Naeem Khan has many favourites in the West which include  Beyonce, Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Princess Aga Khan, Taylor Swift to name a few.

Rachel Roy’s part Indian heritage has helped her add colour to her collection while Mathew Williamson’s constant travels to India has inspired many a collections. And this isn’t all. Even artists like Selena Gomez and Iggy Azalea are rocking bindis, headgear and shiny dupattas! With India being looked upon as a land of undying inspiration, it’s time to turn back to our roots for that’s where the future of fashion lies. Hopefully, we will!

1. Manish Arora
He is the first name that pops into our heads when we think of an Indian who has taken the West by storm! Think of Indian Fashion being taken abroad and one cannot thank Manish Arora enough who has been one of the main reasons Indian-inspired fashion is looked up to in the West. His designs are known to be bizarre, bordering on the wild side yet very sensual and hard to miss. The designer was roped in as creative-artistic director for Spanish brand Paco Rabanne in last year. Lady Gaga walked in his Paco Rabanne design to collect her trophy at the MTV European Music Awards. And another creation, a psychedelic skin tight outfit was made ‘loveable’ by supermodel Heidi Klum for a TV show.  Though last year he parted ways with the brand for ‘mutual’ reasons he will continue to focus on global fashion. Disappointed, are we? Not a bit after seeing his SS’13 Parisian collection complete with head gaer, tiger motifs and churidaar-inspired gold pants.

2. Suneet Varma
Having completed 25 years in the Industry, he has given the rich couture a twist with his designs. He immortalizes glamour and glitz. Being one of the first Indian designers to be called upon by an International house, Suneet has created bags for Leiber which has been carried by JLO, Mariah Carey, Sarah Jessica Parker to name a few for red carpet occasions as well. In 2013, as well we got grand, opulence and drama- few things that form the designer’s signature. Everyone from Sonam Kapoor to Bipasha Basu are self-confessed ‘fans’ of this designer and so are we.
