It would be accurate to say that Rahul Mishra has made full use of his education. But not in the way you might imagine. The 29-year-old’s background in science (he has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Kanpur University)

His prime sources of inspiration has always been the weavers of traditional Indian fabrics, as well as  the art they’ve been practicing for centuries. Rahul’s design philosophy has always evolves around traditional weaves and fabrics such as Banarasi silk, chikankari and Kerala’s cotton handloom cloth (traditionally used to make the mundu neriyathum). But what made him renowned and respected figure in the fashion industry is the ways he used Chanderi and Bandini in his collection.

Recently, the designer has been approached by ‘Fox History and Entertainment’ for a documentary feature on Indian Crafts and Handloom showcasing his new ‘Chanderi Collection’. This new docu eplores the rich world of India`s weavers and their magical creations through designer’s  eyes.

“This is the first time that a documentary on handloom has been done. The production people have done their part of researching and liked my work. There were many designers who were shortlisted including Ritu Kumar but I was fortunate enough to get this opportunity. ‘The Magic of the Warp & Weft’ has been sponsored by the Development Commissioner Handlooms (Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India) and aims at showcasing India`s rich handloom heritage. ” ,the designer adds.

This film is a part of "Colours of India", a dynamic series of documentaries which is being made by the Surabhi Foundation for Research & Cultural Exchange to showcase various facets of India`s rich cultural heritage. This initiative is also supported by UNESCO India.

From the geometric weaves of Ikat to the richness of Benaras, this film illustrates the art form called weaving. `Magic of the Warp & Weft` explores this rich world of India`s weavers and their magical creations through the eyes of Rahul Mishra, a young designer who has dedicated himself to exploring Indian weaves in the world of high fashion,” shared the maker of the film.

When asked about the experience working for the entire shoot, the designer summarized, “Being the main protagonist of the film was really fun. This was the first time I was facing camera as I was doing anchoring so the one month experience was really enjoyable and sentimental. The personal experience of meeting the workers and getting their experiences was very emotional. I explained it would be beneficial for them to become Internet-savvy so I could interact with them on the design and one day, a youngster came up to me with tearful eyes and informed me he had bought a laptop with the advance I had given him! It was such a heartwarming feeling."
