It’s been a year filled with fashion weeks in India. However, for the first time ever, India will see a resort week; a fashion week dedicated entirely to resort wear. India Resort Fashion Week (IRFW) 2011 will see leading Indian designers showcase their collections from 7th to 10th December at Grand Hyatt, Goa. With an extremely promising lineup, fashion week promises to enthrall. Sk picks the designers to watch out for…

James Ferreira
James Ferreira will be opening the fashion week on 7th December. His show will be followed by that of Aarti Vijay Gupta.
James’ collection gives resort an Indian twist. “We’ve done saris over swimsuits, salwar dhotis converted to jumpsuits and slit organza ghagras that can be worn over swimsuits. I’ve also done floating, draped resort dresses. For men, we’ve got shirts with Indian trousers. The colour scheme begins with black and white and goes into brights like green and navy. It’s all about colour blocks in this collection. We’ve also got batik prints that were done in Colombo,” says James.

Narendra Kumar Ahmed
Day 2 sees a lineup of 6 shows with the final show by Narendra Kumar Ahmed. It is titled ‘Osonai’; an offering to God. Narendra says, “Style wise, it is a modern take on 60s fashion. Concept wise, we’ve used dyes made from flowers that are collected by slum dwellers in Mumbai. These slum dwellers are trained to hand dye creating dyes from flowers like marigolds. The colour scheme we’ve used is hues of peach, beige, marigold and tender coconut. We’ve gone with more tailored silhouettes. Generally when you think resort, you think flowy but we wanted to do smart, tailored and stylish resort wear. We have tank tops, tailored trousers, voluminous tops in fabrics like silks, georgettes, cottons and linen.”

Shivan and Narresh
A resort week cannot be complete without the presence of Shivan and Narresh; the first and foremost mainstream beachwear designers of India. Their collection is titled ‘Fore^t Noire’ which means black forest. Says Narresh, “It’s rainforest inspired. We were inspired by all the activites that go on in a rainforest. A rainforest has very bright, exotic insects and plants and the colour scheme will reflect that. We will also be launching our 1st one minute fashion film that will be unveiled before the show.”

Shantanu and Nikhil
Day 3 will see shows by Provogue, Shantanu and Nikhil and Manish Malhotra. Titled ‘Pink Pop’, the collection showcases colour blocking and polka dots. The collection presents a mix of the 60’s kitsch and the modern day minimalism. As the title implies, the colous scheme consists of bright contrasting tones, neon brights and a lively palette of sun warmed hues. Fabrics and surfaces consist of ornate laces, cutworks, coloured cords, pellucid embroideries, hand stitched surfacing with ombre effects. Prints include stamped patterns, pigmented stencils and vintage tropical with great emphasis on Indian cultural prints. The collection is an amalgamation of short airy dresses, halters, bikinis, blouse playsuits, one shoulder/sleeve dresses and gowns.
