BOLLYWOOD ‘CANNE’CTION

It’s that time of the year when people, mostly famous, have been flocking their way to the French Riviera in order to celebrate films, fashion and luxury. As the 64th edition of Cannes Film Festival has arrived, our list of best and worst dressed celebs have also started doing the rounds. While we’re still shocked about Ameesha Patel walking the red carpet, Emma Watson continues to bowl us over this year as well. Our Bollywood brigade has arrived in full blown style this year with designer brands for apparel and jewellery. Here’s an update.

Sonam Kapoor- Last year, critics slammed her Jean Paul Gaultier white outfit last year naming it to be ‘too’ dramatic. The black lace dress didn’t do much either while the polka dotted Naeem Khan was the only saving grace. However, this time around she dressed to impress every onlooker present! The actress wowed us over with her elegantly chic sartorial choices.

The opening ceremony saw her in a lovely ivory lace sari by Anamika Khanna which had dull gold embroidery at its bottom. She teamed it up with a full-sleeved jacket that came with a trail complete with heavy gold embellishments. A Sunita Kapoor nose ring, winged out eyes, plum lips along with open-toed Jimmy Choo, she chose to complete the look. If that wasn’t all, Sonam bought fashion circles to a halt when she dolled up as a princess in a strapless floral printed Dolce & Gabbana gown. Another stunning appearance for the L’oreal soiree, she wore a sheer black lehenga by Shehla Khan and jewellery by Chopard. Yes, on the first glance it does resemble her last year’s McQueen number but this one did save her day. The sheer element added to the sultry playfulness of the lehenga and Shehla is known for utter play on modern-meets-elegance.

Vidya Balan- Another surprise element on the jury panel this year at Cannes was Vidya. As per our prediction, the actress stuck with traditional attire and her most trusted designer, Sabyasachi . We loved her outfit for the Jury Photocall. A white saree with a broad beige and gold border with crew-neck back, full sleeves carrying a black Chanel bag, she posed for the shutterbugs with her dazzling smile. As for jewellery, the talented actress chose an emerald ring, statement-y gold earring and a layered neckpiece, all from the house of Surana.

The opening ceremony saw her in a different avatar in a white lehenga paired with black full-sleeved bodice along with a matching net dupatta over her head. We probably thought that the draped dupatta was a tad bit OTT and dramatic for the occasion. Had Vidya worn her dupatta in a different manner, it would have probably made her look younger. We definitely liked the traditional earrings, massive pendant that hung around her neck, uncut string of stones along with her subtle makeup. All through at Cannes, she has been wearing her hair slick and parted with just a touch of gloss and eyeshadow. We would like to see Vidya try something different in terms of her hair, makeup and of course wardrobe. Hopefully, she will display something different in the days to come!

Freida Pinto- The opening ceremony saw the Slumdog Millionaire actress wearing  a salmon pink halter Gucci gown. It was soft, feminine, backless and flow-y. It was held together by an embellished gold belt and paired with crystal dangling earrings. She wore her hair up in a mermaid braid and very subtle pink lips. Her toned back was complimenting her designer gown while the embellished belt showed off her slim waist. If we loved the simplicity of that dress, Freida bowled us over with a heavily metallic embellished Gucci dress that came with a thigh-high slit. Red lips, deep parted romantic side knotted bun was reminiscent of a 1920’s hairdo. She carried herself around with great poise at the red carpet. We also noticed her dragonfly hair clips that matched the front detailing of the high-necked sleeveless gown! That scooped cowl back detailing, box clutch and strappy Choos later, she looked every bit Gatsby-ish for our senses.  We give both her appearances our thumbs-up!
