She perfectly epitomises beauty with brains. An actress and a theatre personality, Ira Dubey has been phenomenal, be it with her acting skills or with her sense of style. She is vivacious and loves experimenting with things in life. SK gets up, close and personal with Ira as she speaks about her wardrobe favourites and her understanding of fashion.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a way of life and an expression of art. It defines one’s personality and it’s very individualistic. I, myself don’t follow trends blindly, and especially if it doesn’t fit into my personality, I wouldn’t opt for such trends. I make sure that whatever I wear suits my body type. Being petite, I wouldn’t go for broad-legged Palazzo pants as it might make my legs look weirdly long. Most importantly, you shouldn’t slavishly follow trends as it might make you look homogenous. Play with more colours that suit you, cuts and styles that you like and you can look gorgeously fashionable. And if you still want to stick to the trends, try incorporating them in a very interesting and distinctive way.
What excites you about fashion?
As I don’t follow trends strictly or shop from the brands that are in vogue, I feel finding new designers be it big or even the local ones is an exciting concept of fashion. Picking up a unique collection is what defines a person’s fashion sensibilities. Experiment more and don’t always pick up things that are creating a buzz in the market or industry. Try making your sense of fashion stand out from the rest.
How would you define Ira’s style?
It has to be comfy and chic. I like to be comfortable in whatever I wear. Having an element of fun in an ensemble is definitely necessary. Being a outgoing person, I like playing around with bright or subtle colours. It all depends on where I am going and what my mood demands to wear. Whatever you wear, you should feel good and think yourself looking like a million bucks.
Casual and Formal --- what is Ira usually seen wearing?
I basically live in my pair of jeans every day. I team it up with a tee and a pair of flip flops. I do wear cotton dresses and shorts too on usual days. For a formal meet, I would opt for a pencil skirt under a top or a nicely fitted-dress that isn’t very revealing. Shirts and trousers are also my favourite formal wear look. Sometimes, you can also see me in sarees, especially when I am out on film-related meetings. A pair of heels with a single statement piece, be it for the ears, hands or the neckline adds to the look.
What are your travel must-haves?
I always carry a shawl, a bikini, a pair of well-fitted jeans, a light cardigan or a jacket, comfortable pair of flats and my favourite pair of sunglasses.
Your favourite shopping destinations would be...
Shopping is a woman’s best friend. For me, it has to be New York and sometimes Dubai. Milan and Italy, too are a great shopping destination and fashion is extremely well-cut and far more classy and elegant. You will also see me shopping from Mumbai at Colaba Causeway. It’s all about how you carry yourself, either in a designer wear or non-branded clothes and accessorise it well to look different and eye-catching.
Your favourite brands or designers are...
The list’s endless. But what comes to my mind first are Tom Ford sunglasses, designer Anamika Khanna’s Indian wear, Zara for my basic daily wear and Aldo shoes. Other designers like Marc Jacobs, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna and Gaurav Gupta aare also my favourites.
Designers or Brands that top your current wishlist are...
None other than designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s designs! I love the way he blends tradition with colours. Hope to have one of his creations soon in my closet.
